Understand
Capitol Hill, along with Belltown, stands as one of the most densely populated residential neighborhoods in the city. It is not only known for its lively atmosphere but is also the center of Seattle's lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community. Notable residents, like Dan Savage, a popular American gay alternative sex advice columnist and writer, represent the diverse and vibrant population of Capitol Hill. Additionally, Capitol Hill has long been a hub for Seattle's alternative community. In the 1990s, it played a significant role in the birth of the country's grunge movement, attracting famous musicians like Kurt Cobain. Even today, Capitol Hill remains the heart of Seattle's independent music scene. The neighborhood boasts several major retail districts, each with its own unique character. Broadway, running from Broadway and Union up to Roy Street, offers a vibrant nightlife and urban charm. The Pike/Pine corridor, stretching along the namesake streets from Melrose near downtown to 15th, has experienced a revitalization in recent years and showcases a thriving bar and restaurant scene. On the other hand, 15th Ave E and 12th Ave E exude a quieter, neighborhood feel, perfect for families. These areas are home to a variety of shops, boutiques, music venues, and clubs. Condominium and apartment buildings dominate the area west of Broadway, while single-family homes can be found east of Broadway and north of Pine. Sprinkled throughout the neighborhood are grand old homes in a district affectionately called "mansionland" near Volunteer Park. Capitol Hill residents pride themselves on their progressive political views and played a prominent role in the 1999 WTO protests, which spilled over from downtown into the neighborhood.
