Sault Ste Marie, the oldest city in the state, is a magnet for visitors from around the world. It is renowned for its iconic Soo Locks, where massive ships navigate through the international commerce route connecting Lake Superior and the lower Great Lakes. The sheer spectacle of these towering vessels passing through the locks captivates the imagination.
The name Sault Ste Marie derives from the adjacent rapids, and the archaic French word "sault" meaning rapids or waterfall. Besides the locks, this vibrant city offers a host of attractions. Four casinos promise excitement and entertainment for those feeling lucky, while the area's numerous inland lakes, expansive forests, and wilderness present endless opportunities for exploration.
Spanning the St. Mary's River and situated directly across the Canada/US border is its twin city, Sault Ste Marie, Ontario. This unique location allows for a fascinating blend of cultures and provides visitors with a truly international experience.
