Ready to explore the enchanting forest? Good news, there are accessible routes to various parts of the forest, including campgrounds. Hop on New Mexico 4, which takes you through the Jemez Mountains, passing by Redondo campground and others along the way. If you're coming from Abiquiu and heading to Gallina, take New Mexico 96, granting you access to the northwest side. For those planning to visit the ski area and the popular Winsor Trail, New Mexico 475 (Santa Fe Ski Basin road) is the route for you, passing Little Tesuque and Big Tesuque campgrounds. Feeling adventurous? Drive along New Mexico 63, starting from Interstate 25, and head to Cowles. This route will take you to the heart of the eastern part of the forest with multiple campgrounds and easy access to the Pecos Wilderness.
Forest roads crisscross most of the forest, except for the Pecos Wilderness in the north of Cowles and the San Pedro Parks Wilderness on the extreme northwest side. If you're up for some off-roading, high-clearance vehicles will surely come in handy for navigating these roads. Keep in mind that the Pecos Wilderness and San Pedro Parks Wilderness are only accessible on foot or by horseback. No motorized vehicles allowed, so get your walking shoes or saddle ready!
Planning to fly into Santa Fe? Please note that the city has limited commercial air service available. Your best bet is to head to Albuquerque, which has a major airport located 60 miles (100 km) south of Santa Fe. From there, you can easily make your way to the beautiful forest and start your adventure!
