Hop on a bus for a budget-friendly option, although the travel time can range from 4.5 to 6 hours. If you prefer a quicker and more comfortable ride, choose Interbus, which takes only 3 hours at a cost of about $29US. Interbus offers convenient door-to-door transportation from hotels in San Jose and Santa Elena. If you're coming from the La Fortuna and Arenal Volcano area, you have two options. The first option is to take a bus from "La Fortuna" bus station to Tilaran's bus station, then catch another public bus to Santa Elena. Enjoy the scenic views as you traverse the unpaved road between Tilaran and Santa Elena. The second option is to embark on a water adventure across Lake Arenal. Experience the Taxi Boat Taxi or Jeep Boat Taxi, which includes a van from your hotel in Santa Elena to the dam, a picturesque boat ride across the lake, and another van to your hotel in Monteverde or Santa Elena. Be prepared to carry your own luggage up and down dirt paths at the lake. For those who prefer driving, a 4x4 vehicle is recommended. Take the turn off to Sardinal near a gas station if you're coming from Liberia along Highway 1. Enjoy stunning views along the paved road until Guacimal, where the road becomes a rough dirt road. Embrace the opportunity to capture breathtaking pictures during the 1 to nearly 2-hour drive to Santa Elena. Don't forget to make a stop at the gas station and supermarket in Santa Elena for any necessities. Currently, the roads in the center have been paved, providing an even smoother journey!
