Get in
If you arrive in San Pedro by bus, you'll be dropped off in the center of town next to the market. Don't worry, most hotels are located near the lake, but you'll need to make your way downhill to find them. In the center of town, you'll find hotels and restaurants waiting for you. But if you arrive in San Pedro by boat, get ready for an exciting and overwhelming experience. As soon as you step off the boat, you'll be greeted by enthusiastic people offering you hotels, kayaks, horseback rides, and taxis. It can be a bit intimidating at first, but remember, this is all part of the adventure. Now, listen closely. Some of these people will try to lead you to a hotel where they receive a commission. But if you already know the location of your hotel, be firm and let them know you don't need their help. Or better yet, inform the hotel owners that the guide merely followed you. Don't worry about taking a taxi to your hotel, all hotels are within walking distance from the main dock. Here's a little tip: as soon as you step off the dock, take the first left and you'll find a road lined with lots of hotels. Keep walking for a couple of minutes, and after passing a tienda, you'll see a small alley on your right. This alley is full of signs for restaurants, bars, and hotels. If you follow this trail, you'll be in the heart of the action where most tourists gather. Just remember to follow the paving after the first stretch. Oh, and when you pass by Al Suave, make a left turn to discover Jarachik, Buddha, El Barrio bars, hot tubs, and other exciting attractions. If you need any tourist information or assistance, head to the official San Pedro's tourist guides association (ASOANTUR) located right next to the Panajachel dock. Their friendly staff, like Diego, who is one of the youngest guides, speaks perfect English and can help you with any touristy needs you might have. While you're in San Pedro, don't forget to grab a free copy of Sol de Atitlan. This magazine is packed with information about establishments specifically for expats, written by an expat. You'll discover hidden gems, including many great restaurants not listed elsewhere.
