Embark on an exciting and scenic boat journey to reach the charming town of San Marcos on Lake Atitlán. Start your adventure from the public dock in Panajachel, where you can catch a shuttle boat that takes you to your destination in just 45 minutes. Alternatively, you can hop on a shuttle boat from San Pedro La Laguna, which only takes 15 minutes. If you are flying to Guatemala from another country, the most practical way to reach San Marcos is by taking a plane to Guatemala City, also known as 'Guate'. From there, you can embark on a thrilling 3.5-hour drive along major highways, enjoying the beautiful landscapes along the way. Be sure to plan a stop in Antigua, a popular tourist destination. As you exit Antigua, brace yourself for a thrilling ride on a windy, dirt road that leads to the charming town of San Marcos. For a hassle-free journey, consider taking one of the affordable shuttle vans waiting at the airport. These vans operate at various hours of the day and evening, ensuring a convenient transfer to Antigua. From Antigua, you can easily connect with a shuttle to either San Pedro or Panajachel, and then take a boat to San Marcos. For a truly unique experience, consider taking a shuttle from San Cristobal, Mexico. This cultural immersion allows you to travel in a local favorite known as a "chicken bus". This vibrant bus ride takes you to Panajachel, where you can then hop on a luancha, a small boat, to reach San Marcos. Please note that this option is not recommended for first-timers. If you prefer a more comfortable and convenient journey, opt for one of the mini-van shuttles from San Cristobal to Panajachel. These shuttles are not only affordable but also provide a comfortable and enjoyable travel experience. When traveling from Antigua, you will find several shuttles leaving throughout the day, allowing you to easily reach Panajachel. From there, catching a public lancha (boat) to San Marcos is a breeze. The cost for this journey is approximately Q70/Q90, depending on your desired departure time.
