The history of San Juan Island is filled with interesting events that shaped its development. As early as 1845, the Hudson's Bay Company claimed ownership of the island. In 1851, they established a salmon-curing station and a sheep ranch called Belle Vue Farm. At the same time, the Territorial Legislature of Oregon declared the island to be within its limits. This led to a conflict between the Americans and the British, which escalated when an American settler shot and killed a pig belonging to the Hudson's Bay Company. This incident sparked a crisis, and both sides requested military protection. The situation attracted the attention of President James Buchanan who sent Lt. Gen. Winfield Scott to contain the affair. For the next 12 years, San Juan Island was under joint military occupation. The dispute was finally settled in 1871 when the Treaty of Washington referred the issue to Kaiser Wilhelm I of Germany. After nearly a year of arbitration, the United States was declared the rightful owner of San Juan Island. This event established the boundary line through Haro Strait and confirmed the island as an American possession. To this day, the island bears the traces of its history, including roads that were once sheep runs carved by Hudson's Bay Company workers, led by Chief Factor James Douglas.
