The main islands in this breathtaking paradise are the result of numerous volcanic eruptions, leaving behind visible volcanic cones that dot both islands. Although the volcanoes are not active currently, occasional small earthquakes serve as reminders of their powerful presence. In 1911, Savaii experienced its last volcanic eruption, leaving eerie and desolate lava fields that can now be easily explored. These islands are covered in lush vegetation, but unfortunately, most of the original rainforest has been cleared due to human activity. Today, the land is primarily used for farms and semi-cultivated forests, providing sustenance and cash crops for the local population. With over three thousand years of human habitation, the cultivated areas surrounding the villages may seem like dense, impenetrable jungles at times.
