Traveling to S/Jongkhar in Bhutan can be an adventure in itself. There are two main routes to reach this destination: 1. Via the northern route: Starting from Thimphu, you can take a three-day bus ride to S/Jongkhar. The journey includes stops in towns like Trashigang and Mongar, where you might need to spend the night before continuing the next morning. It is recommended to purchase an onward ticket in advance, as buses on the final leg of the journey tend to fill up quickly. The most comfortable option is to travel on small Japanese coaster buses, which operate until Mongar and Trashigang. If there are no seats available on the coaster buses, consider taking one to Jakar and then purchasing a ticket on an inter-district bus from there. 2. Via Assam: If you prefer a different route, you can enter Bhutan through the border at S/Jongkhar from Assam. However, travel to the Eastern districts requires a pass or visa issued in either Phuentsholing or Thimphu. The nearest airport to S/Jongkhar is Guwahati. These routes offer unique experiences and opportunities to explore different parts of Bhutan. Choose the route that suits you best and get ready for a memorable journey!
