Understand
The Salton Sea, once known as the Salton Basin, underwent a remarkable transformation in 1905. An irrigation canal from the mighty Colorado river unexpectedly broke, unleashing a torrent of water into the basin. This flood lasted for a staggering year and a half, completely reshaping the landscape into what we now call the Salton Sea. However, this was not the first time the basin experienced flooding. Throughout its extensive history, the Salton Basin has been submerged numerous times, only to dry out periodically due to the arid conditions of the surrounding desert, which receives a mere 3 inches of rainfall each year.
Once a thriving resort area, the Salton Sea suffered a decline in tourism and the collapse of the resort industry, primarily due to rising water levels and the increasingly high salinity of the water. Today, the Salton Sea area is predominantly focused on agricultural activities, encapsulating a unique blend of nature and human cultivation.
