Sajama National Park is an enchanting destination located adjacent to Lauca National Park in Chile. This remarkable park is home to the majestic Andian Range and the extraordinary Navajo Sajama, which happens to be the tallest peak in Bolivia. Nestled between these soaring peaks, you will discover the picturesque altiplanos, where llamas, alpacas, and vicunas graciously roam. The scenery in Sajama National Park is absolutely breathtaking, offering unobstructed views of the surrounding mountain peaks. Thanks to its easily accessible location, with the main highway connecting La Paz and Arica, Chile passing by the park's edge, embarking on an adventure here is both convenient and thrilling. Although relatively unknown and with limited public transportation within the park, this hidden gem allows you to immerse yourself in the pristine landscape and cherish the tranquility all on your own.
Get in
Trans Sajama offers a daily shared van service from Patacamaya to the village of Sajama. The van leaves from the north side of town in front of 'Restaurante Capitol' at around 1 pm, but it actually shows up around 10 am. People start gathering around that time, and the van leaves once it is full. It is recommended to arrive early and secure a front seat, which not only provides more comfort but also offers a great view of the surroundings. The return trip from the village to Patacamaya is at 6 am, except for Sundays when it is at 4 am. The ride takes approximately three hours. To reach Patacamaya, you have various options. It is located in the main corridor between La Paz and Oruro, so you can catch any bus heading to or from these cities and ask the driver to drop you off at Patacamaya. Another option is the frequent direct shared minivan that operates between La Paz and Patacamaya. It only costs Bs. 10 and is quite fast and comfortable. If you prefer a more local experience, you can take the slower bus that leaves from the Cementario area of La Paz. This option costs Bs. 7 and takes almost three hours. Alternatively, if you are coming from La Paz and prefer a more scenic route, you can catch a bus that runs several times a day between La Paz and Arica. You can get off at the entrance to the park, and from there, the village is just 12 km away. If you happen to be in the nearby border town of Tambo Quemado, you can also arrange transportation through the Trans Sajama office there.
