Nestled in the heart of the Pennsylvania Wilds region, the vibrant town of Saint Marys is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. With its stunning parks, lush forests, glistening rivers, serene lakes, and majestic mountains, there's no shortage of natural wonders to explore.
Founded in 1842 by Bavarian Catholic immigrants, Saint Marys still embodies the hardworking spirit, industrial heritage, and unwavering faith of its early settlers. While their dreams of farming were dashed by the challenging terrain, they quickly adapted by harnessing the power of modern steam engines for logging, sparking a flourishing lumbering industry.
The town's enterprising nature extended beyond logging, with ventures into brickmaking, brewing, and even light bulb manufacturing. In fact, Saint Marys was home to the Novelty Incandescent Lamp Company, which eventually evolved into the renowned Sylvania. Today, their legacy lives on as Sylvania maintains a prominent facility in the city.
In 1992, Saint Marys expanded its borders to encompass the surrounding township of Benzinger, transforming into Pennsylvania's newest city. Yet, despite its growth, much of the city remains unspoiled wilderness, with residential and commercial areas primarily confined to the former borough limits.
While powdered metal, carbon, beer, and light bulbs remain fundamental pillars of the Saint Marys economy, the city is gradually transitioning towards a more service-oriented business landscape, echoing the trends seen across many historic industrial areas.
