But beware, approximately half of these extraordinary creatures are endangered and require our urgent environmental protection. Unfortunately, the reserve faces numerous threats, including habitat loss, declining biodiversity, and population growth in the surrounding region. Illegal trafficking in tropical woods, devastating fires caused by agricultural activities, and the introduction of invasive species pose significant challenges. Additionally, the construction of Route 186 has unintentionally disrupted genetic connections within the reserve, isolating populations to the north and south of this highway. The southern Yucatan is an adventure waiting to happen! If you're a fan of off-road exploration, you'll love traversing the seasonal tracks in this reserve. These tracks are only passable in the dry season, so make sure to pack your sense of adventure and a proper vehicle.
