Understand
Ranger is a town in Texas that gets its name from the Texas Rangers who had a camp there in the 1870s. The area started to see settlers moving in during the 1880s. It wasn't until 1917 that oil was discovered, which led to the town being incorporated in 1919. This discovery sparked an oil boom that lasted for several years, bringing the population of the town to over 30,000 in the 1920s. However, this boom eventually came to an end and by the 1930 census, the population had dropped to under 7,000. In the most recent 2010 census, the town's population was 2,468.
One notable feature of Ranger is the presence of Ranger College (formally known as Ranger Junior College). Founded in 1926, it is one of the oldest continuously operating 2-year colleges in Texas.
