Let's take a step back in time to 1693 when a devastating earthquake struck Ragusa. The resilient Ragusans were faced with a difficult decision: where to rebuild their beloved town. As they came together to make this choice, two groups emerged. The noble San Giorgians, known as the San Giorgians, decided to rebuild in Ibla, creating the magnificent Duomo di San Giorgio. On the other hand, the working class chose the new site of Ragusa and constructed the impressive Cathedral of San Giovanni.
The earthquake dealt a severe blow to the old church of San Giorgio, causing extensive damage. However, the stones from this ancient church were repurposed to build the new Duomo, preserving its rich history. You'll be awe-struck by the exquisite portal of the original church, which miraculously survived the earthquake and subsequent reconstruction.
