When visiting Xining, the capital of Qinghai, it is hard to resist the temptation of visiting the lake. Touts can be heard shouting "Qinghai Hu! Qinghai Hu!" at both the bus and train stations, and almost every taxi driver in town will try to convince you to take a journey to the lake. Be careful and bargain hard to avoid being overcharged. There are three main ways to reach the lake: - Private Car: You can hire a car from a travel agent for around 400. Alternatively, you can approach a taxi driver who might offer you a cheaper rate. Shared taxis to Xihai are also available for 30-40. - Tour: Several companies in town offer trips to the lake. These tours usually include stops at Bird Island, the lake itself, a former nuclear testing site, and various jade stores. Prices start at around 100, but keep in mind that entrance fees are not included and can significantly increase the overall cost. - Public Bus: Most westbound buses from the Xining long-distance bus station pass by the lake. Simply buy a ticket and inform the driver that you want to get off at the lake. You will be dropped off either at Heimahe on the southern shore or Gangcha on the northern shore.
