Once a wealthy Hindu land-owner, the head of the family, Bhatsacharya, was bestowed with the title of zamindar by the Emperor. The Puthia estate flourished under their stewardship, becoming the second-largest and wealthiest zamindary in the entire Indian subcontinent. However, after the partition of India, the zamindars were stripped of their titles and land by the new Pakistani government.
