Understand
Once inhabited primarily by the Bribri, Kekoldi, and Cabecar indigenous peoples, the southern Caribbean region of Costa Rica later welcomed Afro-Caribbean immigrants, many of whom came from Jamaica. These immigrants settled in the coastal towns of Puerto Viejo, Punta Uva, Manzanillo, and Monkey Point, leaving a lasting influence on the local culture. Until the late 1970s, Puerto Viejo remained relatively isolated from the rest of Costa Rica.
