Step into the ancient town of Ptuj, a living testament to history spanning over 2000 years. Delve into the roots of this remarkable settlement, which traces back to the Stone Age. Yet, it was during the glorious era of the Romans that Ptuj truly flourished. Bestowed with city status by Emperor Trajan, the settlement was named Colonia Ulpia Traiana Poetovio. From its Roman origins, Ptuj evolved into a vital military stronghold, a thriving commercial center, a bustling hub of customs, and an administrative powerhouse. In its heyday, over forty thousand souls called the Ptuj area home, a population unmatched in later eras. However, adversity struck in the form of devastating Hun invasions, Avar and Slavic occupations, and its eventual incorporation into the Frankish state under the rule of Slav prince Pribina. Withstand it did, and Ptuj rose like a phoenix. Safeguarding its newfound prosperity, the city became fortified with towering walls. In 1376, the city statutes provided a legal framework, paving the way for economic dominance. Yet, Ptuj was not immune to challenges, succumbing to the ravages of Turkish assaults, catastrophic fires, devastating floods, and merciless epidemics. Today, Ptuj stands as a vital epicenter in the enchanting lower Podravje region of Slovenia. It proudly boasts its legacy as a city of vibrant fairs, exquisite wine cellars, and soothing thermal springs, inviting all who visit to embrace its rich heritage and experience its captivating wonders.
