Welcome to Potos, a city that once glittered with wealth and grandeur! Founded in 1546, Potos became one of the largest and richest cities in the Americas thanks to the discovery of silver deposits in the Cerro Rico. These mines hold a staggering historical record as the richest mines in the world, producing an estimated 60,000 tons of silver. The city's name even inspired San Luis de Potosi in Mexico, reflecting their dreams of equal riches. Legend has it that mules were even shoed with silver due to the scarcity of iron supplies. Potosi's riches were not only invested in precious metals but also in the construction of magnificent baroque churches and monasteries, which are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Sadly, much of this opulence came at a tremendous cost, with millions of indigenous laborers and African slaves losing their lives in the treacherous mines during three centuries of colonial rule. Descend into the dark underworld where miners spent weeks at a time, braving unimaginable conditions. By the 1800s, the silver mines depleted and gave way to tin and, more recently, rare earth mining. Witness the slow economic decline intertwined with the remnants of a wealthy past, as narrow streets wind around colonial mansions and numerous churches. Explore these echoes of history as you journey through the UNESCO World Heritage city of Potosi.
