Welcome to Poteau, a city with a rich history and vibrant culture! Originally part of the Indian Territory, Poteau can be traced back to around 1885. But let's not bore you with the dates – let's talk about the unique name of this city. Poteau is pronounced as "po toe." And if you ask the locals how to say it, they might tell you that it's what you exclaim when you stub your toe – "Oh my po toe!" What a fun trivia, right? But why is it called Poteau? Well, there are two fascinating theories. Some say it got its name from being a trading post, while others believe it originated from the Poteau River.
