Port Dickson, also known as Tanjung, is a charming small town with a fascinating history. It was once a center for charcoal production and later developed into a bustling port by the British during the Strait Settlement period. The town got its name from Officer Dickson, who saw its potential as a harbor and worked to establish it as such. With the discovery of tin ore in Lukut, Chinese miners flocked to the area, contributing to its growth. Port Dickson evolved into a thriving trading center, and railways were built to support its development. Despite its rapid growth, the town has managed to preserve its beautiful beaches. Today, Port Dickson is not only a popular tourist destination but also a vibrant municipality with a population of around 89,000. The town witnessed a boom in hotels and resorts in the late 1990s, with some unfinished projects from that time still visible. However, the economy has improved, and tourism is flourishing, leading to the revival of these projects. The 18 km stretch of beach from Tanjung Gemuk to Tanjung Tuan is a sought-after holiday spot, attracting visitors from Kuala Lumpur and even Singaporeans who have invested in holiday homes in the area.
