Understand
El Salvador International Airport (SAL) may not be a popular tourist destination, but it offers a unique opportunity for travelers with long layovers. Just a short trip from the airport, you'll find a non-touristy corner of El Salvador that few people have the chance to experience. Although this area was affected by a recent earthquake, the locals continue to live their lives and warmly welcome visitors. While the people here may not have much, their friendliness and curiosity towards foreigners make for a safe and interesting day trip. You can explore this off-the-beaten-path destination without being bothered if you prefer solitude. It may not be a glamorous beach, but it's definitely worth a visit!
Get in
If you're looking to visit El Salamar Santuario, the best way to get there is by car. As you drive north from the airport, keep an eye out for a right turn just before the metallic globe, which is about 5KM north of the terminal. Don't worry if you miss it, you'll know you've gone too far if you see a sign pointing to "Villa Palestina." Once you're on the road, it's a 16KM drive until you reach the beautiful beach at the end. If you don't have access to a car, don't fret! There are pickup trucks that provide transportation from the Airport highway to the end of the road. These trucks run frequently, and because many residents in this area don't own cars or have electricity, the fare is quite cheap. So you have options to make your way to El Salamar Santuario!
