Understand
Pirenpolis, like other historic cities in 18th-century Gois, carries the rich heritage of being founded by adventurous Bandeirantes from Minas Gerais, So Paulo, and Portugal. Gold exploration in the Serra dos Pirineus region commenced in 1728, just a year after similar expeditions in the city of Gois. Manoel Rodrigues Toms, in collaboration with Bandeirate Bartolomeu Bueno da Silva (Anhanguera), established the mines known as Minas de Nossa Senhora do Rosrio de Meia-Ponte, which eventually propelled Pirenpolis into prominence as an urban center. Alongside its gold production, the town's cotton industry flourished, and it became a hub for goiana music and home to Goiana's most influential newspaper in the 19th century. As the gold reserves dwindled at the end of the 19th century, Pirenpolis experienced a decline in population, with many residents relocating to the new capital, Goinia, or other cities in the southern part of the state, such as Jata, Rio Verde, Itumbiara, and Catalo. However, with the construction of the nearby Brasilia in 1960, the city experienced a resurgence and was designated as a tourist destination. Efforts were made to preserve the historical center and numerous old buildings, adding to the allure of Pirenpolis as a fascinating place to visit.
