Phonsavan, located in Xiang Khouang Province in Laos, offers several transportation options to reach the town. For those looking to travel by air, you can now fly from Luang Prabang or Vientiane on Lao Skyways. Flights from Luang Prabang are available on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, departing at 11:10 AM. The flight takes approximately 30 minutes and costs around $50 USD. Flights from Vientiane are also available on the same days. If you prefer to travel by bus, there are convenient options from various cities. From Vientiane, you can take either VIP buses or local buses from the northern bus terminal. The journey takes about 8 to 9 hours, and the roads are paved, albeit with plenty of serpentines. From Vang Vieng, the bus ride takes 7-8 hours, while buses from Luang Prabang run daily via Route 13 and 7 and take 8 hours. Additionally, there is a regular VIP bus from Paksan bus terminal that departs at 7:30 AM and takes 7-8 hours to reach Phonsavan. If you are coming from Vinh or Hanoi in Vietnam, you can obtain visas on arrival at the Nam Ka border, which is open daily from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The bus from Vinh operates four days a week and takes 8 to 9 hours. For more flexibility, minibusses are available from both Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng. You can book these minibusses through a travel agent, guesthouse, or directly at the station. It is advisable to inquire about pick-up services when making your booking. Phonsavan also offers connections to other destinations. There are buses available to Thakhek every 2 days, and on the alternate day, you can take the bus to Vientiane, which stops in Paksan. From there, you can catch another bus to Thakhek. Additionally, there is a bus that goes to Pakse. If you are planning to travel to Hanoi, you will need to wait in town until the night bus from Luang Prabang passes through Phonsavan. This bus takes the route towards Hanoi and makes a stop in Phonsavan.
