Phonsavanh, the provincial capital of Xieng Khouang province, was established in the late 1970s, replacing the old Xieng Khouang that was destroyed during the Second Indochina War. Situated in the heart of the picturesque Plain of Jars, this charming town enjoys a delightful climate throughout the year, although the winter nights can be quite chilly due to its altitude of 1100m. As you stroll along the winding main street of Phonsavanh, you'll feel like you've stepped into a vibrant and captivating scene from a David Lynch inspired Spaghetti Western, minus the tumbleweeds. Once you venture beyond the town, you'll be greeted by lush green hills, captivating pine forests, and colorful villages with charming wooden houses. It's not uncommon to spot Hmong cowboys in their brown and violet cowboy hats, adding a touch of cultural intrigue. A highlight of Phonsavanh is the annual Hmong New Year celebration, where you can witness intriguing bullfights and experience the rich ethnic traditions that are still preserved in this region. In fact, Xieng Khouang boasts the largest Hmong population in Laos, making this festival truly unique. Apart from its vibrant festivities, Phonsavanh is also known for its famous nearby attraction, the Plain of Jars, which is currently nominated for UNESCO World Heritage status. The town's economy thrives on various activities such as government administration, mining operations by companies from China and Australia, tourism, and the work of NGOs involved in UXO clearance. For a deeper understanding of Laos' history and daily life, a visit to the UXO and MAG centers is highly recommended. Explore the surrounding areas of Phonsavan to discover authentic and breathtaking landscapes, including the Tad Kha Waterfall, Tam Piu Cave, Mulberry Farm, and the hot springs in Mouang Kham. Phonsavanh also boasts a diverse population, with ethnic groups such as the Phuan, Hmong, Khmu, Tai Dam, Laotian Chinese, Vietnamese, as well as international workers and missionaries from Korea and the USA. Don't miss the opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture and take home some unique souvenirs such as natural dyes and textiles, basketry, mulberry paper umbrellas, spoons made from war scrap, and Hmong embroidery. And before you leave, be sure to try the one-of-a-kind Matsutake Whiskey made from the highly valued Hed Wai mushroom found in the pine forests of Xieng Khouang. For more information, head to the Provincial Tourism Department near the market, Thalat Nam Ngum, on the road to the airport.
