Discover the captivating town of Pevek, the northernmost settlement in Russia and a remarkable urban outpost. Founded in the early 1930s as a crucial transportation hub for the newly-discovered mining region, Pevek boasts a fascinating history. Extensive geological investigations revealed the existence of valuable tin, gold, uranium, and mercury deposits, many of which were actively mined. Once a vital naval base and port in the Arctic, Pevek has experienced significant changes since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. With the closure of most mines and the subsequent evacuation of employees, the town's population has declined by more than half. However, there is hope on the horizon with the opening of the Northern Sea Route, which holds promise for a brighter future for Pevek and its remaining population of less than 4,500 residents.
