Perlis, a small principality in Malaysia, has a fascinating history that dates back centuries. Originally part of Kedah, it occasionally came under the rule of Siam or Aceh. In 1826, the Burney and Low Treaties were signed, formalizing relations between Perlis, Kedah, and Siam.
After years of struggle, Sultan Ahmad Tajuddin of Kedah was finally restored to his throne. However, Perlis was separated and became a separate principality directly vassal to Bangkok. Sayyid Hussain Jamalulail, a descendant of Arab immigrants and the Sultan of Kedah, became the first Raja of Perlis.
In 1909, the Anglo-Siamese Treaty forced Siam to relinquish its southern Malay vassal states to Great Britain. Perlis came under British rule, but during World War II, it was briefly annexed by Japan before being returned. It eventually became part of the Federation of Malaya and then Federation of Malaysia.
Today, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin is the Raja or hereditary monarch of Perlis, having served as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia from 2001 to 2006. The Chief Executive, or Menteri Besar, is Datuk Seri Dr Md Isa Sabu of Barisan Nasional.
The Coat of Arms of Perlis symbolizes the kingdom's wealth and the pride of its people. A green wreath of padi represents the chief economic activity of the region, while a shield in the center holds a ring of golden rice with the name "Perlis" written in the Jawi script.
