To access the Pantanal, you have two gateway cities to choose from: Campo Grande for the southern Pantanal and Cuiabá for the north. Both cities can be reached by daily flights or buses. If you're traveling by bus from Rio de Janeiro, it will take around 30 hours to reach Cuiabá and 22 hours to reach Campo Grande. For those coming from São Paulo, the bus journey to Campo Grande takes approximately 16 hours. If you're starting from Foz do Iguaçu, the trip to Campo Grande can be done in 10 hours. To book bus tickets online, you will need a CPF (Brazilian Tax File Number). Once you arrive in Campo Grande, you can take a taxi from the airport to the rodoviária (bus terminal). From there, you can catch a bus operated by Andorinha or Expresso Mato Grosso to the gateway city of Miranda in Mato Grosso do Sul. This journey takes around 3 hours and costs between R$ 37 and R$ 43. Most ranches, fazendas, and lodges in the area provide pick-up services from Miranda to bring you to your accommodation. It is important to be cautious when dealing with operators at the Campo Grande rodoviária or airport. Some may try to take advantage of tourists by offering fluctuating prices and misleading information. It is recommended to use reputable websites like TripAdvisor to find and book accommodations directly with ranches or fazendas in the Pantanal. This way, you can ensure a reliable and trustworthy experience. If you are coming from the Bolivian side, you have the option of taking a train from Santa Cruz to Puerto Suarez, crossing the border, and then using a taxi or bus to reach the city of Corumbá. However, keep in mind that organized visits from Puerto Suarez and Puerto Quijarro are not available due to nature protection, political reasons, or lack of infrastructure. From Corumbá, you can take a bus directly to Miranda, which costs around R$ 40 to R$ 50 and takes approximately 3 hours.
