Most travelers find themselves in Pakbeng due to the need for an overnight stop during the two-day boat journey between Huay Xai and Luang Prabang. Recognizing this demand, several guesthouses have been established to cater to passing tourists. Additionally, Pakbeng marks the eastern end of Road 2, originating in Udom Xai. Describing Pakbeng as sleepy would be a gross understatement; it is so remarkably quiet that it almost feels deserted. Nevertheless, there are enough restaurants in town to ensure a pleasant evening. It is worth noting that, while 24-hour electricity has recently been introduced in Pakbeng, frequent power outages still occur. It is advisable to bring a torch or have a mobile with you. Furthermore, the town virtually shuts down by 22:00. However, Pakbeng does offer a peaceful night's sleep and breathtaking sunset views over the enchanting Mekong river.
