Understand
Just a stone's throw away from the center of Rome lies Ostia, a vibrant residential area, the city's beach, and a renowned tourist port. This coastal gem offers everything from Roman ruins, harkening back to the days when Ostia was Rome's main port, to a lively carnival atmosphere with dance halls, cinemas, and pizzerias. An absolute must-visit is Ostia Antica, one of Lazio's top attractions, which is often less crowded and even more enjoyable than the famous ruins of Pompeii. If you are unable to make it to Pompeii, don't worry! Make your way to Ostia antica instead. Despite being a Catholic country, Italy embraces a relaxed and liberal beach culture, evident in the skimpy bikinis that grace the shores of Ostia. For a taste of the glamorous Roman Riviera, head to Castelporziano, where pine woods serve as the summer residence of the President of Italy. If you're flying out of Fiumicino, make sure to plan a stopover in Ostia for a convenient overnight stay. You can easily return your rental car and catch a short cab ride, avoiding the hassle of trains and traffic from Rome.
