Centuries ago, the first European settlers in this area were the Quakers who established a community in Sandy Spring. It was here, in the early eighteenth century, that they laid the foundations for what would become a Quaker couple's vision. Thomas and Deborah Brooke went on to found the town of Brookeville and the village of Olney. Olney derived its name from William Cowper, an English poet much beloved by Ms. Brooke. During the first half of the nineteenth century, Sandy Spring played a pivotal role in the Underground Railroad. As devoted abolitionists and advocates of racial equality, the Quakers used this community as an important stop for those seeking freedom. While Olney and its neighboring areas started as peaceful agricultural regions, it rapidly transformed in the latter half of the twentieth century. Olney particularly blossomed, becoming a sought-after place of residence for affluent commuters working in Washington D.C.
