Olancha and Cartago are towns located near the southern tip of Owens Lake. Owens Lake, once a significant source of water, has mostly dried up after its rivers and streams were diverted to the Los Angeles Aqueduct in the 1910s. Cartago gets its name from the Spanish name for the ancient Phoenician city of Carthage in modern-day Tunisia. Nearby, there is also an abandoned settlement known as Carthage.
