Obanazawa, renowned for its incredibly high snowfall, boasts one of the heaviest snowfalls worldwide. During an average winter, the region receives over two meters of snow. In response to this snowy spectacle, a distinct "flower hat" known as hanagasa has been developed to prevent snow accumulation on people's heads. This unique accessory adds a touch of charm to the snowy landscape. Notably, the famous haiku poet Matsuo Basho spent ten days in Obanazawa during his journey along the Narrow Road to the Deep North, an iconic literary expedition.
