The boundaries to the south and east are not clearly defined, but for the purposes of this article, we'll consider everything south of Interstate Highway 40 to be in southwestern New Mexico. There are a few exceptions to this, such as El Malpais National Monument, which is associated with the northwestern town of Grants, and Zuni Pueblo, located in the outlying sections of Navajo Nation. Although this area may not have towering mountains like the north central region, it still offers breathtaking scenery. Don't miss the iconic Shiprock, a cherished landmark on Navajo Nation territory that is often featured in New Mexico's tourism materials.

Farmington, located in New Mexico, is served by various transportation options. Mesa Airlines, a commuter line, used to connect Farmington to major cities like Albuquerque and Denver. However, they have recently announced the cessation of their air service in the area. Currently, Great Lakes Airlines offers flights to Denver and Phoenix, and negotiations are underway for New Mexico Airlines to begin service to Albuquerque. Please note that flights may be intermittent during this transition period. If you prefer train travel, Amtrak's Southwest Chief route passes through the region, briefly stopping in Gallup. Access to Farmington is predominantly by road. The town is conveniently located near Interstate 40, which follows the historic Route 66, providing good connectivity to the south and east on US 550.
