Understand
Macedonia, a splendid former Yugoslav republic, gained its independence in 1991. It is a captivating country with a rich ethnic tapestry, boasting many vibrant minorities. The Macedonians are the descendants of the Slavic tribes that invaded the Balkan and Macedonian Peninsula in the 5th, 6th, and 7th centuries CE. They settled in the Danube river basin and the region of Macedonia, encountering the Byzantine population who already inhabited the area. While Macedonia enjoys cultural diversity, tensions can still arise, particularly between the Albanians, who form the majority in the northwest, and the Macedonians. It is advised to avoid discussing this sensitive subject to maintain harmony and respect. In fact, in 2001, the country teetered on the brink of civil war due to these ethnic tensions.
