If you're planning to visit any northeastern state, the main entry point is Assam. This is true whether you're coming from within India or from Bangladesh. However, entry from Bangladesh is restricted to local traders and government officials. Another option is entering from Myanmar, specifically through Moreh in Manipur. Foreigners are allowed to enter here. However, if you're planning to visit Arunachal Pradesh, keep in mind that you will need a Protected Area Permit (PAP) if you are a non-Indian citizen, or an Inner Line Permit (ILP) if you are an Indian citizen. These permits are issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, but the easiest way to navigate this requirement is to obtain an Indian visa with a special endorsement allowing travel in the state. Additionally, for Sikkim, foreign travelers will need a Protected Area Permit, which can be obtained for free from Siliguri, Kolkata, and Delhi. Keep in mind that in Manipur, Mizoram, and Nagaland, foreigners must register with the Foreign Registration Office (FRO) of each district within 24 hours of arrival. So make sure to plan ahead and make the necessary arrangements for a smooth and exciting journey!
