Newark, located in California, is a city with a fascinating history and unique geography. Surrounded by the larger city of Fremont, Newark was originally planned to be incorporated into Fremont but decided to become its own city. This decision was made because Newark didn't want to be just an industrial area in Fremont. Celebrating 50 years as a city, Newark has a rich history dating back to the 1850s when it was founded as a railroad town.
Named after Newark Castle in Scotland, this small village quickly grew and became a hub for train manufacturing. The Carter Brothers company, based in Newark, manufactured train cars and cable cars for San Francisco. Today, you can still see remnants of the past, such as the Rose of Sharon church built in 1880 and the old Carter Hotel, which may soon become a museum. Newark was also known for its steel foundry, producing stoves.
Nowadays, Newark's major industries have shifted towards electronics and salt production. It has been home to tech giants like Sun Microsystems and Hewlett Packard. The Cargill salt company, previously known as Leslie Salt, also calls Newark home. With its diverse history and thriving industries, Newark continues to be an exciting city to explore.
