This move aimed to maintain Northern/Republican dominance in the aftermath of the Civil War. At the time, Nevada's economy was heavily dependent on mining, connecting it to the industrialized North. Additionally, Nevada was seen as a counterbalance to California, which had more agrarian and Confederate sympathizers. While Nevada has diversified its economy over the years, with sectors such as agriculture, light industry, distribution, and gaming emerging, it is important to note that a significant portion, over 87%, of the land is still owned by the Federal Government.
