Basho's Narrow Road travelogue is hailed as one of the most legendary accounts of exploration. Fully conscious of the perils that awaited him, Basho fearlessly set forth on his expedition, even going as far as selling his house and preparing a will, expecting that he might never return[^Oku]. Basho, known for his poetic flair, took some artistic liberties in his account of the exact route and sights he encountered.
