The 1931 Napier earthquake and subsequent fire had a devastating impact on the downtown business area. However, from the ashes arose a magnificent display of architectural brilliance in the form of the Art Deco style. Napier now proudly holds the title of the Art Deco capital of the world. The destruction caused by the earthquake led to the creation of beautiful gardens and recreational spaces along the eastern foreshore. The rubble from the demolition was transformed into these serene landscapes. In addition, the earthquake caused a significant elevation of the land. Places that were once estuaries, such as the airport and low-lying areas in Onekawa, Pandora, Pirimai, and Tamatea, have now become elevated. As a result, some streets in the region have retained their original names from when they were located on the coastline. Streets with names like "quay" or "bay" can now be found inland. Just nearby, the township of Taradale is home to the oldest and most renowned wineries in the region. During the summer seasons, these wineries become vibrant concert venues, adding to the allure and charm of the area.
