Nalanda, established as a Buddhist university in 450 CE, holds the esteemed title of being the longest-running university in Indian history. Over the centuries, celebrated figures such as the Buddha and Mahavira graced its halls, making it a coveted destination for seekers of knowledge. At its peak, Nalanda accommodated over 10,000 students and employed over 2,000 faculty members. Tragically, this educational haven suffered destruction at the hands of Turkish Muslim invaders in 1193. During this fateful event, both students and teachers were mercilessly massacred, and the colossal university library was consumed by flames. Today, all that remains are extensive ruins that span across a vast area of 14 hectares. Explore the remnants of this ancient institution and witness the echoes of a bygone era.
