Embark on an unforgettable adventure to Mount Merapi, Indonesia's most active volcano! To reach the village of Selo, which serves as the gateway to this majestic peak, there are various transportation options available. If you're arriving at Yogyakarta Airport, you can hire a taxi to Selo and back, which will cost you approximately Rp 1,000,000. Many of the taxi drivers are accommodating and willing to wait for you while you explore and conquer Mount Merapi before safely returning you to your hotel. Alternatively, for budget-conscious travelers or those seeking a more adventurous experience, you can opt to join Yogyakarta Transport and climb, a group package that costs Rp 300.000 per person for groups of two or three people. Please note that most agents require a minimum of two people, so if you're traveling solo, you might need to be patient and wait for a suitable group to form. For those interested in camping trips on Mount Merapi, you can arrange a package for $250 per person, which includes transportation from your hotel or Yogyakarta Airport, necessary equipment such as tents, sleeping bags, and mattresses, as well as meals, a headlamp, a professional guide, and a porter. If you prefer a more independent approach, you can rent a scooter in Yogyakarta and embark on a scenic journey to the summit. Start your adventure by riding north on Jalan Magelang for approximately 45 minutes. Once you reach Mungkid, take a right turn onto Jalan Boyolali-Mungkid and head towards Ketep. At Ketep, turn right again and continue following Jalan Boyolali-Mungkid until you reach Selo. From Selo, ride up the steep road on the right, leading to the trail entrance, where you can safely park your scooter and begin your trek. Another option is to take a bus to Magelang from Jombor Terminal in Yogyakarta. Get off at Blabak (Mungkid) and hire an ojek (motorcycle taxi) to Selo. The ojek ride takes about 1.5 hours and costs approximately Rp 80,000. Ensure that you arrive in Blabak early enough to reach Selo before sunset, as traveling by motorbike at night on the rough roads can be risky. Please note that green Bemos (public minibusses) do not directly travel to Selo, as locals consider the road conditions unsuitable. Whichever transportation option you choose, your journey to Mount Merapi and the village of Selo promises to be a thrilling and awe-inspiring experience!
