Despite this long-standing presence, Motala wasn't granted its town rights until the late 19th century. Adding to Motala's significance, the Motala Works emerged as Sweden's very first mechanical industry in the early 19th century. A remarkable engineering feat, the Gta Canal was meticulously dug over 22 years, connecting the Baltic Sea to the North Sea. Motala, strategically positioned in the heart of the canal, became the prestigious headquarters of the canal company. In the roaring 1920s, Motala secured its place in history as a key player in the development of the Swedish radio network. Proudly hosting the largest broadcasting station, Motala was renowned throughout the country.
