Montreal, located on an island in the St. Lawrence River, has a rich history dating back to before the arrival of Europeans in Canada. Explorer Jacques Cartier first visited the area in 1535, finding a thriving St. Lawrence Iroquoian town called Hochelaga. In 1642, Ville-Marie was founded as a Sulpician mission and quickly became a center of the fur trade. Montreal remained the most important city in Canada until the 1970s and briefly served as the province's capital in the 1840s. During the Prohibition era in the United States, Montreal became a popular destination for fun seekers from neighboring New England and New York.
