Understand
Imagine the thrill of designing a brand new city from scratch. That is exactly what renowned urban planners and architects did when they created Milton Keynes in the 1960s and '70s. Unfortunately, many people dismiss Milton Keynes as soulless or simply mock it for its concrete cows. However, these critics often have never spent time there or experienced its rich history and diverse offerings. Nestled within its expansive 22,000 acres of countryside, Milton Keynes is not just a new town but a place rooted in 150 million years of history. It features ancient archaeological sites dating back to 2000 BC, the remains of a Roman villa, and remnants of old towns. Green spaces abound throughout the area, along with a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities. And of course, there are plenty of fabulous shopping opportunities. Originally designed to accommodate 150,000 Londoners over two decades, today Milton Keynes thrives as a town of contrasts. It boasts innovative business and entertainment hubs, theaters, cinemas, tranquil parklands for walks, charming pubs for lunches, and peaceful canal trips. It truly has something to offer everyone, including its famous concrete cows!
Get in
Conveniently located on the M1 motorway and the West Coast Main Line, Milton Keynes offers easy access for travelers. Whether you prefer driving or taking the train, there are multiple ways to enter and leave this vibrant town. For road travelers, the M1 motorway connects bustling London with vibrant Birmingham, continuing north to the lively city of Leeds. Located halfway between London and Birmingham, Milton Keynes is perfectly situated for easy exploration. Additionally, the A421 provides convenient east and west links to charming destinations like Bedford, historic Cambridge, and the renowned city of dreaming spires, Oxford. If traveling by coach, you can take advantage of the Coachway near junction 14 of the M1. Explore the wide array of coach services available to various cities, including Oxford and Cambridge. The Coachway conveniently shares the Park and Ride car park, allowing easy access to the town center and Central station. Rail connections are well-maintained by Avanti West Coast and West Midlands Trains. Hop on a frequent train to explore iconic destinations such as London, Northampton, Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester, and beyond. For more information on the Park and Ride service, check out the website of the National Park and Ride Directory. Take advantage of the quick and reliable service offered by the 200 buses running every 30 minutes from Central Milton Keynes to MK Coachway on weekdays, and every 15 minutes on Saturdays. If you prefer to drive into the central area, be cautious of the parking system. While Red Zones near major shopping centers can be expensive (1 pound per 30 minutes), there is a more affordable alternative just across the street. Look out for the less obvious purple zones, where parking costs only 50 pence per hour. As SatNav systems often struggle to find adequate parking spots in MK, be prepared for a bit of hunting.
