Understand
Middelburg, the capital of Zeeland, is a city rich with history. It gets its name from being located between two fortifications, Domburg to the west and (Oost-)Souburg to the south. The quaint old inner-city of Middelburg offers plenty of opportunities for eating, drinking, and shopping. The Abbey Square and Lange Jan are popular attractions, along with the Zeeuwse Museum.
Middelburg surprises visitors with its wide variety of places to eat and drink. The gothic city hall is a prominent landmark in the Middelburg market square and a favorite spot for photography. Every year, a significant number of tourists flock to the city, especially during the spring and summer. In recent years, Middelburg has also become home to a small student community, thanks to the presence of Hogeschool Zeeland and University College Roosevelt. The railway station is conveniently located next to the canal (Kanaal door Walcheren), connecting the Middelburg harbor with Veere and Flushing.
