Understand
Welcome to the extraordinary world of Meteora! These stunning rock formations, which emerged about 60 million years ago, were shaped by the forces of nature. Carved by water, wind, and extreme temperatures, they have transformed into magnificent pillars of rock. These rocks have a fascinating history - once inhabited by hermits seeking spiritual isolation, they became the sites of monastic communities.
In the 14th to 16th centuries, 24 monasteries were constructed on the summits of these rocks. Today, six of these monasteries still stand, captivating visitors with their architectural and artistic brilliance. These monasteries were not only centers of Orthodox faith during the Byzantine era but also home to exquisite religious artwork and precious manuscripts, some of which are on display in their museums. It's no wonder that the Meteora monasteries have been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
But Meteora is not just a place of historical significance. The Meteora-Antichassia region has been declared a Natura 2000 Ecological Zone by the Greek Ministry of Environment, protecting its rich biodiversity, including rare species of birds and flowers.
