Understand
Mount Merbabu, named after its meaning "Mount of Ash" in Javanese, is an active stratovolcano located in Central Java. Situated in the district of Magelang, Boyolali, and Salatiga, it is approximately 70km away from Yogyakarta, a well-known tourist basecamp for Mount Merapi and the temples of Borobudur and Prambanan. Despite being overshadowed by the more famous Mount Merapi, which is 234m higher, Merbabu offers a less crowded and equally breathtaking panorama. Although the last observed eruption was in 1797, it maintains its status as an active volcano.

Set off on an unforgettable trek to Mount Merbabu, a majestic peak that awaits your exploration. Begin your journey in the picturesque village of Selo, nestled amidst the magnificent mountain bridge between Merbabu and Merapi at an altitude of approximately 1500 meters. Reaching Selo village is an adventure in itself. A scenic drive of around 2 hours from Yogyakarta takes you to this hidden gem. While there are no official tour packages available to book in Yogyakarta or any nearby city, don't let that deter you. If you're a group of more than 3 people, you can approach a local tourist office and request them to organize a customized trip to Merbabu. For an exhilarating and budget-friendly option, renting a motorbike in Yogyakarta is highly recommended. With a rented motorbike, costing around RP 50,000, you can embark on a thrilling journey to the Selo basecamp. Simply navigate your way to Jl. Magelang and drive approximately 45-60 minutes north. Once you reach Mungkid, seek guidance from friendly locals to find the road that leads to Selo village. You can also rely on GPS to ensure you're on the right path.
