Menzies, once a thriving town in the late 1800s, is now a humble reminder of its golden past. In 1894, gold was discovered here, sparking a frenzy among prospectors seeking their own fortunes. Within a year, the town grew rapidly, boasting a population of 10,000, numerous hotels, churches, and even a brewery. But as with many boomtowns, Menzies faced numerous challenges that ultimately led to its decline. Harsh weather conditions, water shortages, fires, and disease outbreaks took their toll on the town. When the gold reserves dried up, so did the population, dwindling to just over 200 residents today. Despite its diminished size, Menzies still holds a special allure for travelers. Many pass through on their way to see the famous sculptures on Lake Ballard, but Menzies itself has plenty to offer. Explore the preserved original buildings that stand as a testament to the town's former grandeur. Don't miss the nearby Goongarrie railway cottages and Niagara Dam, lesser-known attractions that offer a glimpse into the region's history. To make the most of your visit, stop by the Menzies Visitor Centre for information about the town and surrounding areas. They can provide insights into the town's history and help you plan your exploration. The visitor center is located at the corner of Shenton & Browns St and can be reached at +61 8 90242702. It operates from 9AM to 4:30PM and is the hub for all town services.
